About this site

I want to explore why I decided to call this project "the learning church."

One reason relates to the practice of naming a movement or organization for the feature or attribute on which you choose to focus. If the movement is a reaction to an existing movement that one is leaving behind, it conventional to name it for the attribute that movement lacked. We can see this in the history of Christianity.

In church history, names are rarely arbitrary; they are usually flags planted in contested ground. When a group feels a specific truth has been buried or neglected, they name themselves after that "missing" piece to ensure it remains the center of gravity.
